Leo Bourgault's 84-year-old sister, a resident of the New England Home for the Deaf, can find another place to live.

"I'm glad she's safe," he said.

Viki Brooks, who lives about 300 yards away from the explosion site at 6 Rainbow Terrace, opened her home to neighbors whose houses suffered various degrees of damage. Half of one man's house collapsed, but he was walking around with just a scratch, Brooks said.

The neighbors took comfort in each other's company. They snacked and even laughed together.

Turns out Thanksgiving started early in Danversport this year. Because on the eve of the holiday, Brooks was full of gratitude.

"We're so blessed," she said.
